Can you Locate KennythePirate at Walt Disney World this Weekend?

ktp-w-jack

I’ll be heading down to Walt Disney World late tonight in order to spend a couple of days at Star Wars Weekends.  I hope to gather info about character locations and schedules to help you guys have an even better experience at SWW.  (If you are interested in helping, just ask a CM when you get in line what time the next set(s) are for your favorite character.  You can Tweet me, respond to this thread or KtP Facebook me.

So, here’s the deal…I won’t be wearing my usual Character Locator shirt because I want Star Wars character photos wearing a Star Wars shirt.  IF you can locate me at Hollywood Studios (or any other park), I will have some special Limited Time KtP Magic to share with you.

In addition, keep an eye on www.characterlocator.com  (bookmark it) as we will be doing a Soft Opening for the general public this weekend.  There may still be a few wrinkles to iron out, but it’s pretty close to being finished.  The Soft Opening preview will be totally free, but you’ll need to register to view all the data and help us test the registration system on a larger scale.

Some KtP housecleaning

Don’t worry, my actual house is in its usual messy state.  Well, except for the areas my wife cleaned today.  That reminds me that I need to tell my oldest daughter to clean her room.  I wonder if she’ll read this on Twitter :)

I’ve been working on adding a great deal of addition information to the blog.  I began the blog with the intention of helping people locate characters at Walt Disney World, then many of my friends began requesting the weekly entertainment

schedules, so I started doing that and updating every Saturday night.  Then friends asked if we could turn our character schedules into an app.  I really wanted to put show schedules in that app, but it wouldn’t work, so we started all over and made it killer instead!  Time has come to add more data to the Blogola.  One of the reasons that I chose a new theme was to allow more links on the top bar and prominently feature other items that are most used on the top left.

menu

I’ve added new links across the top to make it easy to find what you’ll need to plan your visit to Walt Disney World and I’m working on adding the content to those areas.

Here’s some of what I’m up to:

  • ATTRACTIONS - I’ll be adding descriptions and information about all the attractions in Disney World.  Nothing is there currently, but will be filled in soon.
  • CHARACTERS
    • You’ll find all the same great character schedules, the master list and interaction tips.  I recently added possible locations for characters at Disneyland and I added the Water Park characters to the drop down to make them easy to find.  I added top menus to help with navigation.
  • DEALS
    • In this area you’ll find great deals like free dining, room discounts and in the future I’ll add Disneyland and Cruise Line deals.
  • DINING
    • Phase one is to get all the menus from the four parks, then add all the other counter service and table service restaurants.  I have no intention of adding carts, too much work for little benefit to people.  In the future I probably won’t add beverages because it takes a lot of time to tell you there’s coke, coffee, water etc…at every restaurant.  I’m sure you’ll find something to drink :)
    • I also moved the character meals information from Characters to Dining.
  • ENTERTAINMENT
    • Renamed this area, but it’s the same great content.  I still need to add reviews for different shows and I’ll be changing the layout.
  • EVENTS
    • I currently have placed Star Wars Weekends here to make it easy to find and navigate and soon I’ll add the other event info for things like Flower and Garden, Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party, Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party and the like.  I’m turning them all into mini-sites to aid navigation.  I’m doing away with the icons that I used on the old site and moving to a cleaner link them with site colors.
  • HOTELS
    • Soon I’ll have information on all the hotels, so you can choose which hotel is best for your family.
  • HOURS
    • I added Park Hours for all 4 major parks.  I’ll work on water parks later, but that one is pretty easy because they don’t change much.
  • TICKETS
    • I added all the ticket prices for Walt Disney World Tickets.
  • TOURING
    • Soon I’ll be adding my Touring Plans.  I’ll be re-writing the existing character ones based on current schedules and adding plans that offer characters and rides!

Did I miss anything that you’ll need to find easily to plan a GREAT Walt Disney World trip?

Photo of Mickey and Minnie in Adventurers Outpost

DISNEY, Walt Disney World, Animal Kingdom – Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse have a new home base at Disney’s Animal Kingdom.
Adventurers Outpost opens today on Discovery Island, and it’s the exploration headquarters for everyone’s favorite globetrotting duo, where they get together with friends old and new.

Step inside Adventurers Outpost, and you’ll find mementos from Mickey and Minnie’s expeditions around the world, including stunning photographs from their trips to destinations as varied as the mountains of Nepal and the savannas of Africa.
Of course, some of the best memories of all come when you get your chance to meet Mickey and Minnie, share stories of your own travels and capture that postcard-perfect photo with your Disney pals, before heading out to continue your adventure at Disney’s Animal Kingdom.

NOTE:  It is a NEW meet area, but the costumes are the same.  The meet will offer FASTPASS+ in the future and provides air conditioning and some Mickey magic.

CharacterLocator.com testing information

mobile siteUsually I post photos of characters, events and such.  Today I thought I’d share some feedback we are receiving on our new CharacterLocator.com mobile site testing.  The above photo was from my friend Susan who has tested the response times so much that she’s worn a divot into her finger :0  Thank her when you thank the Phoenicians!

This app will be FAR more than just character meets, we are offering park hours, character meets (schedule, tips, I Met tracker, Share), show schedules, rides (still completing our wait time/fastpass script), dining menus, special event info, character dining and more to come.

We’re working through each issue as it’s presented and keeping a running file on the testing site for our testers to know that their issues are being addressed.  We still have a number of things to resolve, but we’re getting much closer each day.

Here’s some actual comments from Character Locator Beta Testers:

“Parks and characters load immediately.  I really like the Tips section.  Love the Dining section with prices.”

“It is wonderful.    Everything on the site was loading within 1-3 seconds on my iPhone 4S.  Mostly within a second.”

“Site looks great. Load times are fast, when I open an area that had not been previously viewed I would say it loads within a second. Then when I load something that has been previously viewed it opens it almost instantly. Love the tips section specific to each character!”

“Just did the initial loads and reloads, 3 seconds on the first load and then 1-2 on the second (wow that’s fast!)”

“Tested again all pages loading within seconds, working great!”

“Hey Kenny!!!!! LOVE LOVE LOVE the app!!!  Super fast load time. 2-3 seconds max!!!!  Great job!!!”

“I tested the site this afternoon on my phone, and it worked great! Everything loaded instantly for me. When I click on hours for each park, it loaded a bit slower, like maybe 3-4 seconds.  This app will be great for our trip! ”

“Used 3G with iPhone 4S at AK today. Main AK page loaded in about a second, same on reload. Other pages under AK including character pages were about 3-5 seconds. ”

“It’s great!!!!  Now I wish I was waking up in FL with ears :-(  Very user friendly & not slow on my phone.”

“Under a second for most pages! I have been testing off and on all day on wifi and most pages are up in less then 2 seconds.”

“This is amazing.   Loving this!!  This seems to be all the info I look for in a quick easy to use app.”

Are you as excited as me to see Character Locator PRO coming to other mobile platforms?  Get to help so many more people enjoy the parks like I do!

“Life-size” Rancor to appear for Star Wars Weekends

From the Disney Parks blog:

“Also new this year is a photo opportunity with a “life-size” rancor. The giant beast, which was Jabba the Hutt’s prized pet in Star Wars: Episode VI Return of the Jedi, will be on display during the event. The handcrafted replica is 17 feet long and weighs more than 700 pounds. The reptomammal sculpture is well-traveled — it’s a popular piece at Star Wars events around the globe and will make its way to our park for Star Wars Weekends.”

Should we expect him inside Darth’s Mall?

Limited Time Magic – Cinco de Mayo and Three Caballeros confirmed

May 5, 2013 to May 11, 2013This May, Walt Disney World Resort is throwing one festive party… and it’s all set to go down at the Mexico Pavilion at Epcot!

In honor of Cinco de Mayo and Día de los Niños, Epcot will be hosting “¡Fiesta!”—a week-long celebration honoring the pride of Mexico, the personality of its people and the color of its culture.

From meeting classic characters to eating authentic Mexican foods and collecting magic merchandise, this is sure to be one fiesta you won’t soon forget!

Entertainment and character experiences are subject to change.

Meet The Three Caballeros
Don’t miss a rare opportunity to say “¡Saludos Amigos!” to three of the most famous Latin American lovebirds in history, The Three Caballeros!

Panchito, Jose Carioca and, of course, el Pato Donald are getting the band back together and they’re ready to pose for a picture or two—stop by and meet these classic Characters while you have the chance!

Move Your Feet to the Music
Once you’ve had your fill of The Three Caballeros, get ready to groove to music from south of the border, and maybe even move your feet a little!

First, soak up the spirit of the occasion with an energetic set by delightful marionettes. Then, float through the romanticized beauty of Mexico’s history with some folkloric dancing. Finally, work up an appetite with a little dancing of your own, set to the tunes of the world-renowned band, Mariachi Cobre!

Feast on Festive Mexican Eats
Ready for an authentic Mexican food experience? San Angel Inn Restaurante and La Hacienda de San Angel will both be a huge part of the occasion and they’re preparing a selection of fiesta-themed offerings to celebrate!

Check out the listings below for the Cinco de Mayo-specific menu, complete with appetizers, entrees and even a dessert!

Appetizers

  • Cream of Chile Poblano: Chile poblano, cilantro, onion, garlic and Mexican cream, garnished with tortilla strips, poblano peppers and cream ($7.50)
  • Chalupas de Chicharron: Corn dough topped with roasted chipotle sauce, shredded chicken, pork rind in green tomatillo sauce, fresh cheese, sour cream and avocado ($11.50)

Entrees

  • Chile en Nogada: Egg-battered stuffed poblano pepper with pork, almonds, raisins, apple, pineapple, cinnamon, roasted tomato and garlic, topped with a walnut cream sauce ($24.50)
  • Enchiladas de Mole Poblano: Corn tortillas filled with marinated chicken, topped with mole poblano sauce, sesame seeds and Mexican cream ($23.50)
  • Pollo Rostizado en Salsa de Mercado: Slow roasted French-chicken breast, topped with a roasted green tomato, pine nuts, garlic, onion and saffron sauce ($23.50)

Dessert

  • Camotes en Leche Condensada: Sweet potato dessert topped condensed milk, garnished with almond brittle ($7.00)

And for something fun to wash it all down with, stop by La Cava where you can sample an assortment of different drinks, including margarita-flavored Horchata and zesty Micheladas.

You can even try the famous “Banderita”—three separate shots that together form the colors of the Mexican flag!

Cinco de Mayo Ear Hats
Before this fiesta has you ready for a siesta, pop into a shop at the Mexico Pavilion and purchase a Cinco de Mayo ear hat!

Capturing the essence, color and iconic symbols of Mexico, there’s quite simply no more festive way to commemorate the year of the ear!

Character Locator feature #3 – Dining Menus

We’ve made the decision for now to include the Counter Service and Table Service restaurants with their appetizers, entrees, desserts and regular drinks.  In a later release we will offer Food Carts and look into ways to expand outside the four parks, but this should suffice for now for those trekking through the four main parks.  Next time, I’ve considered adding links that easily separate Counter, Table and Carts, but not in this release.

Screenshot_2013-05-01-20-35-52

Epcot Dining locations at a glance. I’ve failed to mention in the last two posts that you can easily change the sort from “By Name” to “By Land.” The “By Next Time” feature works well for characters and shows, but is pretty useless in dining :)

Screenshot_2013-04-28-10-26-12

Dining defaults to the menu for each location. You can see an image and a map too! (Who needs GPS and Auto Location, we have a MAP!  All GPS does is eat battery faster than Wifi, then 4G would be next. We’d like to have your battery charged so you can use the app!)

DDP snacks are listed with a little icon, spiffy huh?

I really like the new costumes, what are your thoughts?

Character locator app: Shows

Yesterday I introduced you to the some of the new features for the Characters area of the new Character Locator app that will be released to the Android market on Saturday, May 4th.  (We are also working on a Mobile Site that will help with the iThing, Blackberry, Windows phones and other assorted stuff.  While we work on iThing native app, this should fill the bill for a while.)  I’ll write more about the Mobile Site later this week.

Today, let’s look at the “Shows.”  After choosing Magic Kingdom, you merely click Shows on the bottom bar and you will receive the “At a glance” view of the current shows.  It was 10:23 a.m., so you can see what’s available at that time.

Screenshot_2013-04-28-10-24-00

At a glance will show you all the current and upcoming shows in any park.

Screenshot_2013-04-28-10-24-14

Show schedule in detail.  Of course, I chose a pirate photo.  Arrrr!  (Do you like my new right side icon???

Screenshot_2013-04-28-10-24-24

Details about the show and best times to see.  I corrected the spelling issue.

The Shows section will also offer the I SAW, Wait, Share and Camera features that I introduced yesterday.  With this app you’ll be able to track every attraction you experience on your trip or merely see every accurate schedule at a finger tip’s touch.

Show schedules updated every Saturday night when WDW releases them.

Character Locator feature Day Two: Character Meets.

Yesterday, I began demonstrating the new features of the NEW version of the Character Locator app that will release to Droid on Saturday, May 4th.  We will be launching the paid version with no advertising of any type first for a cost of $2.19.  That’s the same cost as a cup of bad coffee at Walt Disney World and you’ll get more out of it than a temporary pick-me-up.  Soon after, we should have the free, filled with advertising version.

Today, we’ll look at the new Character Meets features.  The app is set to default load to the character schedules when you click on a given park.  You’ll find ALL the characters at a glance, even if they aren’t currently meeting.  You can click on any character to view the following features: full schedules, interaction tips, track your meets, time your wait, share with others and even SHOOT PHOTOS from the app that stores on your phone.  (In the update after, you’ll be able to upload to your own account at http://www.characterlocator.com)

Screenshot_2013-04-28-10-19-22

Click on MK icon and it defaults to this screen. All parks default to Characters first. If you want to see the other data, just click a button on bottom.  Our app always shows what’s going on RIGHT NOW, not an hour ago or 3 hours into the future too.   LOOK the Tremaines do exist!

Screenshot_2013-04-28-10-19-34

Click a character on the list and you’ll find a page like this. It defaults to the full schedule. If you want tips, just click Tips on the bottom bar.

Screenshot_2013-04-28-10-19-44

Tips page has a lot of the same great info from the old app, but easier to find!

Screenshot_2013-04-28-10-23-09

Time your wait. You can also view other user’s waits from the same day within the app.

Screenshot_2013-04-28-10-23-36

Share your experience with friends. I often use this with my Twitter feed. I click the Twitter icon and then attach a photo that I just took with the Camera button :)

ep_2013_04_17_10_20_04340639026

The photos are stored in a folder on your phone called “Character Locator.” On my phone it’s under “Pictures” The photo even includes the Park in which you took the photo, The date on which the photo was taken and the time.
The format looks like this: ep_2013_04_17_10_20

Pretty huge improvement over the old app, huh?
