This holiday season, the idea of “wishing upon a star” will take on an even more magical meaning in the skies of Disney Springs.
Disney Springs will offer a totally new and free night time light show that will use hundreds of flying Drones linked in sequence with one another. In the brief video that Disney released today, you will find the drones humming along while forming an enormous Christmas tree.
Here’s your first look:
Walt Disney World was recently granted permission by the FAA to fly the Drones as a show. We’ve known for a while that they were testing Drones for shows, but few expected them to debut at Disney Springs.
Disney refers to the flying Drones as “Flixels” in their 2014 patent.
“Flixels are to accompany entertainment at the Walt Disney World and Disneyland Resorts, including during each resort’s nightly Fireworks Spectaculars. Deployed from a monitored platform designated as the launch/land area in restricted access areas of each resort, Flixels will be “magically” incorporated into Disney story elements that engage and inspire children and their families. Once the show segment concludes, Flixels will return to the launching/landing area.”
The Drones aren’t supposed to be within 100 feet of a guest area and should fly as high as 150 feet. Disney hasn’t announced the beginning date, but most of the Disney Springs celebration will begin on November 11, 2016.

This looks so cool! I'm going to be so bummed if we don't make it there this year! Still planning to fly standby to Disney Springs for a day or two! It all depends if there are available seats. I really I like this idea and would love to see it!
