This year has seen a variety of changes for DVC. The minimum amount of points to buy into the program and receive member benefits has increased as well as rules surrounding resale purchases.
New properties have opened to buyers.
And now, Disney is changing the points chart for 2021 for all Disney Vacation Club Members. It may affect travel plans for current DVC members as well as purchase plans for those looking to buy into the program.
For those who are unfamiliar with it, Disney Vacation Club (DVC) is a popular way for Walt Disney World Guests to stay in Deluxe accommodations during their visits to the parks.
Members purchase a points contract either directly through Disney or on the secondary market, and they cash in those points in exchange for accommodations at a DVC resort. Properties include The Grand Floridian, Bay Lake Tower at the Contemporary, and the new Riviera Resort.
Recently, Disney posted an updated points chart on its website. Points categories were divided into 5 separate groups of date ranges in 2019/2020, but for stays in 2021, points will fall into 7 categories of date ranges. These changes only affect the Walt Disney World DVC Properties and not properties such as Vero Beach or Hilton Head.
According to the website, this change is the result of an analysis of travel demand with the goal of more evenly distributing travel throughout the year, thus improving accommodation availability for DVC members. See the official statement in the screenshot below.
Some dates will be priced at a higher amount of points than they previously were, and others will be priced at a lower amount than they were previously, so this may be a positive or a negative change for travelers depending on when their desired vacation dates fall.
For comparison, here is the chart depicting the prescribed amount of points required for a 2020 stay at Beach Club Villas and the new points chart depicting a 2021 stay at the same resort.
For example, the same time period, December 24-31, shows a difference in 10 points needed to stay in a deluxe studio from 2020 to 2021.
However, from June 11 to August 15, a deluxe studio drops from 134 points in 2021 to 127 points in 2021.

Time will tell whether or not this change will be one that helps members snag the hard to get reservation they want. It may allow some members or point-renters to grab a great deal on a stay that falls within a less popular travel date range.
