Become a Disney Imagineer from Home with Khan Academy

Are you looking for a fun educational experience for your children while they are off of school? Now is your chance to get a glimpse of what is like to be a Disney Imagineer because Disney has partnered with Khan Academy to offer Imagineering in a Box.

Do you ever wonder how teams of artists, engineers, and designers work together to bring a Disney theme park to life? Did you watch The Imagineering Story on Disney+ and become inspired to create a theme park of your own?

Imagineering in a Box

Imagineering in a Box is a free online program that offers video lessons and project-based exercises to design a theme park of your own from home. Disney Imagineers from around the world provide immersive experiences in creating worlds, designing attractions and bringing characters to life.

Let’s dive in and see what all you can do with Imagineering in a Box!

Creating Worlds

This course offers lessons that include the difference between an amusement park and a theme park. It also covers park layout, building design, graphics, landscaping, and creating park menus.

Khan Academy states, “You’ll walk out of this lesson with a theme and high concept for a land of your own design along with a mood board and map that conveys the land.”

Designing Attractions

This interactive video and hands-on series offers 9 lessons that have students use math, engineering, and artistic design to envision and create a dark ride for their theme park.

Khan Academy states, “You’ll walk out of this lesson with a beat sheet (bullet point summary), a digital layout, and a physical model of your attraction.”

Bringing Characters to Life

These 6 lessons introduce a variety of ways that Walt Disney Imagineering brings characters to life and explores the process of character development.

Khan Academy states that participants will “walk out of this lesson with a character sheet, a costume, a simple physical armature design, and a digital actuated armature.”

All three modules suggest a minimum time commitment of two hours to complete the entire lesson series. However, it is easy to complete 1-2 lessons a day and pick up where you left off. Each lesson takes about 10-30 minutes to complete.

If you’ve ever visited a Disney theme park and found yourself inspired to dream, build and create, ‘Imagineering in a Box’ is a program we suggest you check out.
