Both Disney World and Disneyland have reached agreements with several unions regarding the furlough set to begin on April 19.
It was announced on April 2 that executive, salaried, and non-union Cast Members would be temporarily furloughed beginning on April 19. Talks with some of the unions representing certain Disney employees were likely already underway, but have not been finalized until now.
Disney World
In a joint statement from the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local 2088, they “and Disney have reached an agreement for hourly Guest Services Call Center and Telecommunication Services cast members that will maintain members’ health insurance benefits coverage, educational support, and additional employee assistance programs during a temporary furlough effective April 19. This agreement provides an easier return to work when our community recovers from the impact of COVID-19. We are grateful to have worked together in good faith to help our cast and members navigate these unprecedented times.”
Similarly, the American Federation of Musicians Local 389 and Walt Disney World Resort “have reached an agreement that will maintain members’ health insurance benefits coverage, educational support, and additional employee assistance programs for hourly entertainment musician Cast Members.”
Disneyland
Over on the West Coast, the union representing Security Cast Members at the resort reached an agreement that was essentially the same as noted above.
According to the OC Register:
“Independent Employee Service Association and Disney have reached an agreement to hourly security Cast Members that will maintain members’ health insurance benefits coverage, educational support, and additional employee assistance programs during a temporary furlough effective April 19. This agreement provides an easier return to work when our community recovers from the impact of COVID-19. We are grateful to have worked together in good faith to help our cast and members navigate these unprecedented times.”
Workers United 50 also shared an update to their negotiations with Disneyland. They have not reached an agreement yet because they want to make sure the Cast Members who have insurance through Disney will continue to have it. You can see the full Facebook Live update below:
With the furlough set to begin on April 19, negotiations with more unions will likely take place in the very near future. It seems Disney World and Disneyland have been reaching similar agreements that have the best interest of the Cast Members as the top priority.
