With a lot of us working from home during this time, we need as much magic as we can get! Let’s take a look at ways we can disney-fy your home office! And to get you started, take a look at the main photo: that’s Walt Disney’s office in its original glory!
Many of us brought our offices home with us when businesses temporarily closed its doors due to COVID-19. Many of us already work from home (as a writer for Kenny the Pirate, I fall into this category) and just need some Disney magic on our desks!
Whatever the reason is, there is no doubt that little touches of Disney magic can keep you motivated! I’m going to share some ideas of how you can throw some pixie dust on your home office to keep you going as you work from home.
Background Noise
The atmosphere of your work environment can greatly affect how you work. If you are in a crowded space or your work area is in a main area of the house, you may find yourself distracted and feeling less than magical.
I have 4 young children so my work space cannot be secluded from the main areas of the house. Yes, this can get distracting, but I have taken a few steps to combat this:
Play Disney Music
We have Alexa set up all over the house, including my work area. I love asking her to play Disney music while I work. It motivates me to write and it clears some of the distractions from the rest of the house (like my kids yelling or the tv blaring).
Sorcerer Radio even has atmosphere music, which is music you would hear around the parks. This instantly transports me to Disney World, and I love it so much!
Just whistle while you work!
Turn on a Disney Movie
As long as you don’t have phone conferences or zoom meetings, a movie or show playing in the background is an effective way to keep your kids occupied and also give your mind a few little breaks while you work.
Disney+ has a great line up of what’s coming in May – including a Mandalorian documentary, The Princess Bride, and the Rise of Skywalker! You can see the full list of everything coming to Disney+ in May HERE.
Just be careful you don’t get too invested in the movie or show that you forget about your work!
The Smells and Tastes of Disney
What better way to bring you to Main Street U.S.A. than by eating popcorn or Pirates of the Caribbean by lighting a scented candle? You can bring many of the smells and tastes of Disney to your home office.
The Tastes of Disney
I know the snacking is getting a little excessive for me, as it probably is for many of you. All of this sitting around at home and reading all of the amazing recipes for Disney food is getting to me!
We have shared recipes for Dole Whips, churros, grilled cheese sandwiches from Woody’s Lunch Box, beignets, and more. Why not whip up some of these while you and your family are home all day?
Eat the grilled cheese on your lunch break, and throw some popcorn in one of your many popcorn buckets you brought home from vacation as a snack!
The Smells of Disney
The sense of smell is one of the most powerful senses we have as it relates to our memories. One way to bring that home is through candles, wax melters, and diffusers.
There are many candle companies out there that create scents that resemble Disney Parks. You might smell the orange trees in Soarin’ or the ocean breeze of Flight of Passage.
Picking up your favorite scent and putting in your work space may help ground you, destress you, and motivate you.
Decorating, Disney-Style
Of course, one of the biggest things you can do to Disney-fy your home office is to spruce it up with your favorite pictures, quotes, and momentos from past vacations!
On my desk, I have a photo frame I bought on our first family vacation with a photo of all of us in front of Spaceship Earth at Epcot. I also included a small snow globe for a little piece of Disney magic and a Disney book I could read a few pages from if I need a mental break.
I also repurposed a Disney mug by putting a fake plant in it – it adds a touch of greenery to my work space, which always lifts my mood.
You could throw pens, highlighters, and markers in a Disney mug too!
Just take a look around your work area, and ask yourself if there is anything you can replace with something Disney – a clock, mouse pad, stationary, etc. You can even turn your Disney vacation photos into a magnet or mouse pad, like Susan suggested HERE.
Marisol also shared some photos of her home office HERE, which could also help you brainstorm some ideas!
Inspirational Quotes
I think one of the best ways to bring a little pixie dust into your work space to help motivate you and ground you is by hanging up an inspiring quote or photo that reminds you of “home.”
I found a photo of Cinderella Castle, added “a dream is a wish your heart makes” (because it is a dream to write about Disney!), printed it out on cardstock, and hung it on my wall.
Every time I look at it I am reminded of my happy place and to keep pursuing my dreams!
There are also some fun calendars you can find with a new quote or saying each day.
Here are a few quotes from Walt Disney himself to help get you started:
“It’s kind of fun to do the impossible.”
“All your dreams can come true, if you have the courage to pursue them.”
“Disneyland will never be completed. It will continue to grow as long as there is imagination left in the world.”
“A man should never neglect his family for business.”
I hope I have given you some new ideas to help bring a piece of the Disney magic straight into your home office during this crazy time of social distancing and working from home! Stay safe and healthy, Crew!
