Calling all animal lovers! Join us in welcoming this new baby to the Oasis!
A New Babirusa
Guess what, Disney animal fans! There is a new baby babirusa in Disney’s Animal Kingdom! She is joining the host of babies who have recently been introduced to the parks.
Baby Nutmeg became only the second babirusa piglet to be born in Disney’s Animal Kingdom. She has spent her first few months of life as many of Disney’s baby animals do bonding with her mother behind the scenes.
You may recall when Disney’s first ever babirusa joined the animals at Animal Kingdom. Baby Kirana joined the Disney family back in May of 2020. You can read her story here.
What Is a Babirusa
If you are wondering what a babirusa even is, you are probably not alone. Many people are not familiar with the species.
A babirusa, which you may also hear referred to as a “deer pig”, is a member of the pig family and is commonly found in Indonesia. It is kin to other Disney animals including the wart hogs, which you can see on the Kilimanjaro Safari ride.
The most distinguishing feature is that the males have long upper tusks that grow upward and curl away from the face as well as a set of lower tusks. They can have quite an intimidating appearance.
The species is unfortunately endangered, so Kirana and Nutmeg are both conservation WINS. Disney works through its Species Survival Plan to protect endangered species like Nutmeg and her family through responsibly breeding to expand the species.
Her Animal Kingdom Debut!
Now Nutmeg is ready to greet guests! She and her mother are enjoying their home in the Oasis at Disney’s Animal Kingdom.
The Oasis is the lush exhibit that guests see as they enter the park. I think of it as Animal Kingdom’s version of Main Street USA as it does the job of setting the tone for what is to come as you exit the outside world.
Even so, the animals tucked into the Oasis are a treat that guests often miss! This is especially true for those who rush to rope drop Pandora. Many speed right by without realizing it has unique creatures to visit and never backtrack to see them.
So, next time you are in Animal Kingdom, take a little time to enjoy the Oasis! You might just be rewarded with the chance to encounter a baby Babirusa!
