We have some very sad news to share this morning. A tragic accident involving a teenager falling from an attraction results in death.
ICON Park
Located in Orlando, ICON Park is an entertainment complex featuring fun and games for the whole family. There’s restaurants, funky bars, boutique shops, and amusement parks for people of all ages to enjoy.
Attractions include a Ferris wheel, wax museum, aquarium, swing-style ride, train, museum of illusions, and more. Two of the attractions, the StarFlyer and Free Fall have been at the center of some tragic accidents as of late. Back in September 2020, we shared the horrible news that a construction worker fell to his death as he was working on the StarFlyer (pictured above). You can read that news story HERE.
Now, another tragedy has occurred at the same park.
Free Fall
The Orlando Free Fall ride opened in December 2021 at ICON Park. According to a news release, the thrill ride stands 430 feet, “making it the world’s tallest free-standing drop tower.”
The park says the ride holds 30 riders. The ride rotates around the gigantic tower as it rises to the top. Once riders reach the top, the ride tilts forward 30 degrees and faces the ground for a “brief moment before free falling nearly 400 feet at speeds reaching over 75 mph.”
Tragedy
According to local news channel WTSP, the sheriff’s office says its deputies responded just after 11 p.m. last night, March 24, to the Orlando Free Fall ride at the park. Witnesses reportedly saw a person fall from the ride to the ground.
Deputies confirmed a 14-year-old boy was rushed to the hospital where he died from his injuries. The investigation is still in its early stages. Therefore, we do not have any information on what caused the fall or if ICON Park has responded.
We send our deepest condolences to the family of this teenager and those that witnessed the event.
