In recent weeks, the weather in Orlando has generally been hot and dry. A pattern change is on the way with unsettled weather expected this weekend. Find out the timing of rain chances as well as how long the unsettled weather will last.
Weather Forecast Discussion
High pressure over the Eastern United States will drift off the Carolina coast on Friday. The combination of a stalled frontal boundary over southern Florida and a more moist airmass will lead to higher rain chances than recent days.
Showers with some embedded thunderstorms are likely this weekend. While I expect the heaviest rain to be across the Treasure Coast and down towards Lake Okeechobee, Orlando could see some heavy downpours. There could be some localized flooding in any of the heavier showers.
The surface map above for Saturday morning shows the frontal boundary across southern Florida with showers along and north of the front. Both Saturday and Sunday should see some periods of sunshine, but be ready for showers as well.
The stalled front will eventually dissipate and the airmass will become a bit drier. The showers will become less widespread by early next week.
Severe Weather Chances For Florida
No Severe Weather is expected throughout the forecast period. The thunderstorms that may accompany the rain showers this weekend are expected to remain below severe criteria. Remember that any thunderstorm can produce gusty winds, frequent lightning, and heavy downpours. Follow any warnings and cast member directions to take shelter.
Flight Impacts
This category is designed to point out any large-scale impacts on flights getting to and from Orlando. The struggles and impacts on the airline industry in the wake of the pandemic that led to flight cancellations have been well-documented. I’m focusing on the weather impacts.
We do have a storm system moving through the Midwest that will likely impact some flights this weekend. The main story will be severe weather possible from Oklahoma to the Dakotas on Friday and that threat will shift to the Missouri Valley on Saturday. Check your flight status if flying out of or into these areas.
In terms of Orlando-area airports, there could be some minor delays with the shower activity this weekend. It does not look like a major issue but be advised that some delays are possible.
A Look Ahead
Looking ahead to next week, conditions will improve compared to this weekend. However, the unsettled weather sticks around with afternoon showers and thunderstorms possible. Temperatures will warm to near 90 degrees each day.
