The live-action Little Mermaid had a fantastic opening weekend.
Live-Action Little Mermaid
Over the last few years, Disney has developed a habit of rebooting animated classics as live-action films. Among the movies that have received reboots are Beauty and the Beast, Mulan, Lion King, Aladdin, and Dumbo.
Unless you actually live under the sea (or under a rock), you have probably heard by now that Disney has created a live-action version of The Little Mermaid. The movie’s cast includes stars like Halle Bailey (Ariel), Melissa McCarthy (Ursula), Daveed Diggs (Sebastian), and Jonah Hauer-King (Prince Eric.)
Don’t forget that the film’s release also means that there will be a live-action character meet in the parks! You can read about it here. There is also a slew of new merchandise and other experiences, which you can read about in this post. We even have new Happy Meal toys!
Projections
Deadline projected that the film would earn $110 million over the course of Memorial Day weekend. If that projection comes to fruition, it will launch the film into one of the top 8 earners among movies that opened on Memorial Day Weekend.
To compare, Top Gun: Maverick set a record for Memorial Day weekend with an opening weekend haul of $160.5M last year.
So, how did the movie do?
The film did very well, indeed! In fact, it did better than projected! Disney’s newest live-action remake brought in $117.5 million at the US box office over the long holiday weekend. The movie is the fifth best Memorial Day opening weekend ever!
The live-action Little Mermaid brought in $117.5 million this past weekend.
