Disney Has Found Some Innovative Solutions to Waste Problems

There is so much bad news brewing lately. Here are some happy discoveries to make you feel better about the state of the world.

Disney certainly has some messes to navigate (in more ways than one). But in this case, the mess has nothing to do with legislation or finances. In fact, Disney is contributing to finding solutions that affect humans globally.

For nearly a century, Disney has created stories that celebrate the wonders of the world we all share. Now the company is writing a new chapter in which it focuses on lowering the impact of operations, leading in wildlife care and conservation, and telling stories that inspire action. And two innovative solutions stand out as Disney works towards goals for 2023.

Shattering Innovations

Disney recently received the Environmental Initiatives Award at the SEAL 2023 Business Sustainability Awards for an initiative that is something of a ground “breaking” discovery. The glass pulverizer pilot program at Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground has received much acclaim.

Disney has been taking recycled glass and turning it into fine sand and gravel mixtures. The pulverizer processes glass in a way that removes any sharp edges, which makes it safe for both people and animals to walk on. This means that the resulting sand and pebbles can be used in a variety of ways such as filling in holes on gravel roads and horseback riding trails.

Innovations that Make a Splash

Moreover, Disney Parks require the use of a surprising number of wetsuits. The idea does make sense when you consider that the success or the operations of some parks involves aquariums.

On that note, have you ever wondered what happens to a wetsuit once it reaches the end of its life? Disney has been working to make sure the answer does NOT include a landfill.

For the past two years, the team at Disney has been searching for an innovative solution to help reduce waste while maintaining the comfort and durability of a wetsuit. After a testing phase, biodegradable wetsuits made from recycled materials began replacing older, worn-out wetsuits. Disney even found a way to recycle the old ones!

These are just a few of the ideas driving success as Disney works towards 2030 conservation goals.
