An Expansion is On the Way

Theme park fans everywhere are excited for the grand opening of Illumination’s Villain-Con Minion Blast. This innovative new attraction is heading to Universal Studios Florida at Universal Orlando!

We first learned about the attraction, which is part of the new Illumination’s Minion Land expansion, a few months ago. With the popularity of the Despicable Me movie franchise, it is little wonder that Universal elected to expand from its existing Despicable Me Minion Mayhem attraction to create an entirely new land!

In addition to the attractions, the land also features FOUR eateries. These include Illumination’s Minion Cafe, which will serve up fun and inventive cuisine, or Bake My Day, where you can head for some sweets. You can also grab some cool treats at Freeze Ray Pops. Finally, if popcorn is what you are after, you will find sweet and savory options at Pop-A-Nana.

But, for most people, the big draw is the brand-new attraction. If you head to Universal and spot Gru’s House, all you need to do is look across the street to see the new attraction Illumination’s Villain-Con Minion Blast! The attraction will be located at the former spot of Shrek 4-D at Universal Studios in Orlando. And, we have NEW details.

Illuminations Villain-Con Minion Blast Details

So what exactly is Illumination’s Villain-Con Minion Blast? The attraction’s developers have described it as a fully-immersive, game-based attraction where visitors grab a handheld blaster to earn points as a motion-based walkway propels them to each part of the challenge. Nothing else quite like it exists!

This attractions uses a motion-based walkway, but also accommodates wheelchairs!

Essentially, Illumination’s Villain-Con Minion Blast invites guests to participate in this interactive blaster game to win an opportunity to join the Vicious 6. For those who are unfamiliar with them, the Vicious 6 is a band of supervillains from the Despicable Me movies. In fact, they are very villains who inspired Gru in his rise to super-villainry.

As you enter the attraction, you’ll walk through the Villain-Con trade show floor featuring booths loaded with accessories and tools of the villain trade.  This is where you will be equipped with an interactive “E-Liminator X” blaster!

Then you will begin the challenge! Each member of the Vicious 6 has a room with a challenge set up for you. You will move through each unique room to earn points using the blaster using various freeze ray, fireball, lightning bolt, and force blast modes. You are unbound by a ride vehicle, and you can use your full range of motion to acquire points as you wind through the rooms.

Of course, there is a competitive component. You must compete against the other participants to vie for your position in the Vicious 6. You will have to be the best of the best to impress the Vicious 6.

Along the way, you will encounter plenty of minions. After all, what is Minion Blast without minions?

Want more fun? The Universal App will pair with your blaster to keep track of your various achievements, scores, positioning on leaderboards, etc., and allow you to unlock some cool experiences for subsequent games.

Who Can Experience It?

While there is no height requirement, anyone under 48″ tall must have a supervising companion along to experience the attraction. Additionally, participants cannot carry along an infant in their arms as they will need BOTH hands to operate the blaster.

Most excitingly, it opens soon! While the date is still TBA, we do expect it in Summer 2023. The construction walls have been removed and Team Members are currently testing the attraction.
