In April, a fire broke out unexpectedly during a showing of Fantasmic! in Disneyland. The Maleficent dragon caught fire, and flames eventually engulfed it. The show has remained closed since this incident.

Initially, Disneyland released the following statement: “Our goal is to always deliver the best possible show for our guests. With that in mind, we have made the difficult decision to put Fantasmic! on hiatus through at least Labor Day.

“Teams are actively exploring alternate entertainment offerings for guests this summer and we look forward to sharing more soon.” It took some time, but last week Disneyland finally offered an “alternate entertainment offering.” Read more about this HERE.

Last night, Disneyland announced that Fantasmic! will in fact not return by Labor Day. They now project a reopening date of spring 2024. That now looks like a full-year closure for Fantasmic! at this park.

This show employs many Cast Members and Disneyland shares that they will continue to offer cross-training opportunities throughout the parks for those affected.

Big Change

Not only is there a delay in the return of Fantasmic!, but there is also a quite noticeable change to this show. The large Maleficient dragon has breathed her last.

When Fantasmic! returns new special effects will replace Maleficient. At this time, we are left wondering what this may look like. This news may be disheartening for guests with plans to visit Disneyland in the coming months.

What do you think of this extended downtime and of this new change? Do you think the special effects will be worth the delay? Share your thoughts with us and share this news with a fellow Disney pal.
