Best known for his role as the comical Pee Wee Herman, we’re sad to announce that Paul Reubens has passed away.

Paul Reubens created and played the comedic Pee-wee Herman on television’s Pee-wee’s Playhouse. In addition to playing Pee-wee Herman, Reubens appeared in the following film and television shows: The Nightmare Before Christmas, Batman Returns, Matilda, Blow and The SmurfsThe Blacklist, Gotham, 30 Rock, What We Do in the Shadows and Star Wars Rebels.

Speaking of Star Wars roles, did you know there is a way that Paul Reubens’ legacy continues at Disney theme parks? That’s right, he currently voices R3X? Rex, a former pilot of a Starspeeder 3000 for Star Tours, was reprogrammed to be a DJ in Oga’s Cantina. Today, you can listen to Paul Reubens voice as R3X playing the latest hits from around the galaxy in the heart of Black Spire Outpost.

Paul Reubens is the current voice of R3X at Oga’s Canteen.

The Pee-wee Herman Instagram account released the following statement about his death:

Last night we said farewell to Paul Reubens, an iconic American actor, comedian, writer and producer whose beloved character Pee-wee Herman delighted generations of children and adults with his positivity, whimsy and belief in the importance of kindness.

Paul bravely and privately fought cancer for years with his trademark tenacity and wit. A gifted and prolific talent, he will forever live in the comedy pantheon and in our hearts as a treasured friend and man of remarkable character and generosity of spirit.

After a 5+ year private battle with cancer, Paul Reubens passed away yesterday, July 30, at the age of 70. In preparing for his death, these final public words were released on his Instagram account:

Please accept my apology for not going public with what I’ve been facing the last six years. I have always felt a huge amount of love and respect from my friends, fans, and supporters. I have loved you all so much and enjoyed making art for you.

Paul Reubens

Reubens will forever be remembered by the wide variety of roles that he portrayed. Our thoughts and prayers are with his friends and family during this time.
