Warning: Laundry Facilities are Now Closed Indefinitely at this Disney World Hotel

With almost no warning, one hotel on Disney World property closed their laundry facilities indefinitely.

Doing Laundry on Vacation

Chores on vacation sounds like an oxymoron, but I (Monica) love to do laundry while I’m on vacation. No, the actual act of hauling a bag of dirty clothes is not fun, but doing so allows me to pack less clothes for my family of 6.

If you are lucky enough to have a villa with in-room laundry facilities or very close to a shared laundry room in your hotel, this can make the process of doing laundry so much easier. The hard part for me is usually finding time to do laundry in between all the fun!

All Disney World resorts and on-property hotels (ie: Shades of Green, Swan/Dolphin) have laundry facilities. Unfortunately, one hotel closed its laundry rooms without much notice.

Now Closed

For Guests staying at Shades of Green, the perks of staying there are slowly fading. First, they closed the walkway from the hotel to the Polynesian Resort in May. This was a huge blow because many Guests (especially those who use mobility devices like ECVs or wheelchairs) like to use the Monorail to get to Magic Kingdom and Epcot.

Now, the laundry facilities are closed with almost no warning. Late last night, I received an email from Shades of Green:

Please be advised effective immediately as of 2300 hours (11 PM) tonight 02 AUG 23 both Palm/Magnolia Laundry rooms will be closed indefinitely until further notice. Please ensure that any laundry is completed and removed from the laundry room before 2300 hours as the power to the laundry rooms will be turned off and the doors secured closed.

Unfortunately, this will also include any access to the microwaves and vending machines that are also located inside the laundry rooms. Guests who need to use microwave for **baby formula only** are directed to proceed to the Java Cafe where the staff will assist you.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and we hope you continue to enjoy your stay with us here at Shades of Green Resort.

Implications

I called this morning, August 3, to confirm and was told that, yes, the information in this email is correct. They were not available to provide any additional information about the closure other than they are updating the laundry facilities.

As of the time of writing, this information is not readily available on Shades of Green’s website or social media pages. It seems to me Shades of Green does not want to let Guests know ahead of arrival that laundry services are not available.

Perhaps this is because when they closed the walkway they received a lot of backlash on social media. Now, it’s not Shades of Green’s fault that Disney closed the walkway in order to create a new road. However, the appeal of Shades of Green is definitely not as attractive as it used to be.

Hopefully work will be completed quickly and the laundry facilities will reopen soon. In the meantime, be prepared with plenty of clothing! Also, Java Cafe is only open from 6 am to 11 pm daily, so if your little one needs a warmed bottle in the middle of the night you won’t be able to head to the cafe.

A little trick I used to when I needed a warm bottle was to get boiling water and put it in a large cup. Then, I would put the bottle inside the large cup to warm it up. Check the temperature of the milk periodically! Coffee pots are available in each room so just brew a pot of water. Of course, it may be beneficial to bring a bottle warmer if you want to go that route.

Note: the Magnolia Suites DO have a full-size washer and dryer. As far as I know, these are not affected.

Do you do laundry at Disney World? Are you a Shades of Green Guest? What do you think of this news? How will you prepare? Let us know in the comments below and share this post with a fellow Guest of the hotel.

Thank you for this information! We are planning a combined Disney Cruise and WDW Visit and wasn’t sure what the best way to pack would be. It seems like we’ll be able to take less since we can do laundry once we get to the resort. Do you happen to know whether there are laundry facilities on the Disney Cruise Liners as well? I’m hoping we don’t have to use them, but with a five-year-old and a two-year-old it’s best to be prepared!

This article was written back in August 2023 and new machines have since been put in at Shades of Green. To answer your question, yes, there are laundry facilities on the ships. Enjoy your cruise!
