Disney’s new Lorcana game has hit the market. We are surprised at the price some of these cards are already fetching on the secondary market!
Lorcana
Disney has partnered with Ravensburger to create a family-friendly collectible trading card game called Disney Lorcana. It is a strategy-based game where payers create their own decks and face off against each other in a race to use a team of glimmers to collect pieces of lost “lore” from the realm of Lorcana. Like other card games, it has appeal from both a gameplay and a collecting standpoint.
In fact, this game has been highly anticipated. Special releases and early releases made the game available to players a little early, which only served to build hype for its official September 1, 2023 launch. Sellouts and supply issues have made obtaining cards a little tricky in these early stages.
The First Chapter
Now, the inaugural set of Lorcana cards called the First Chapter has hit the market. As is the case with other collectible trading card games, scarcity is a factor in Lorcana. That is to say that some cards are rare. In fact, Lorcana collectors may be delighted to find either Enchanted or Legendary rarities when they open their newly acquired packs of cards.
Basic Lorcana packs contain 12 cards and an art cart. These will generally include the following: 6 Common cards, 3 Uncommon cards, 2 Rare/Super Rare/Legendary cards, 1 Foil card of any rarity, and 1 Mickey Mouse, Brave Little Tailor Art Card. You can tell how rare the cards you receive are by looking at the symbol on the card. The more sides the rarity indicator symbol on the card has, the rarer the card.
Very Rare Cards
Legendary and Enchanted cards are the rarities everyone is hoping to find in their Lorcana packs. Rumor has it that only one in every five or six Lorcana packs contains a Legendary card. There are 12 of these special cards to collect. In fact, the two most powerful cards that are currently in Lorcana are Legendary: Rapunzel – Gifted with Healing and Elsa – Spirit of Winter.
Enchanted cards are special Lorcana cards that are even more rare and desirable. There are 12 of these cards, and they show up even less often than Legendary cards. All of them are foil cards with a special, eye-catching ink-washed foil. There is a catch for these cards though.
According to Lorcana, “The gameplay and subjects of each card are identical to those of their standard counterparts in the set, so there’s no game advantage to playing with enchanted cards.” So, these specific cards very much cater to the collecting aspect of the game rather than mere gameplay.
Of course, there are also rare promo cards. These include cards that were specially released at the 2022 D23 expo and other such special editions.
Which Cards are Valuable
Of course, the secondary market is always in flux, but certain Lorcana cards have already established high secondary market values. TCGplayer is one resource for tracking the market value of trading cards. You can also check completed eBay auctions to track values.
We took a look at the September 8, 2023 market value for some Lorcana cards. It is wild that such a strong market already exists.
For example, right now, the market value for that Legendary Rapunzel-Gifted with Healing card mentioned earlier is $56.46. And the Legendary Elsa-Spirit of Winter card is $48.73.
However, even more valuable are the Enchanted cards. Notably, the market value for Mickey Mouse – Wayward Sorcerer (Alternate Art) or #208/204 is $335.08. More impressively, the market value for Elsa – Spirit of Winter (Alternate Art) or #207/204 is $697.92. The other Enchanted Rares have a current market value of anywhere from $189 to $291.
And, if you happen to have a D23 promo card, like many of the ones pictured in this post, you might have a hot item on your hands. They have a market value of as much as $1200-1500 each.
Not all cards are going to be hot on the secondary market. Common cards, for example, typically range from 7 cents to $1.50 in market value.
Of course, all of this will fluctuate. It will certainly be interesting to see how high values get and where things begin to level out as the game ages.
Can you believe the prices some of these cards are fetching? Are you playing Lorcana or collecting the cards? Have you opened any rare Legendary or Enchanted cards yet? Let us know in the comments. And, feel free to pass this along to friends and family members who are also enjoying the game.
