Disney is just one of many companies canceling ad spending on Twitter/X. The reason for departure is none other than X owner, Elon Musk.
What’s Going On
The Walt Disney Company pauses ad spending on X along with several other companies. Other companies that join include Apple, IBM, and Lionsgate. Apple was even on track to spend close to $200 million on ads last year.
Unfortunately, tension has been brewing since Mr. Musk purchased Twitter (not known as X) last year. When he bought X, Musk wanted looser content moderation rules and more free speech.
This caused many companies to back off as the idea that their ads could be placed next to offensive, or otherwise hateful, speech.
Why?
The decision to cancel ad spending all stems from Musk’s agreement with a post about Jewish people who are facing antisemitism amid the Israel-Hamas war. The theory refers to the idea that they Jewish people are pushing the “exact kind of dialectical hatred against whites that they claim to want people to stop using against them” and supporting the immigration of “hordes of minorities.”
“You have said the actual truth.” Musk replied.
The conspiracy theory claims that nonwhite immigrants (like Jews) want to replace the white race.
Aftermath
In the aftermath of his comments, advertisers have reportedly contacted X asking why Musk has been making comments that appear antisemitic. They even claim their ads are appearing next to Nazi content.
We are unsure if Disney is one of those companies that called, but they have cut off advertisement spending at this time. They have not made any public statements regarding the situation.
Do you think this is the end of X? Will Disney restart spending on advertisements before 2023 is over? Share your thoughts with us in the comments below. And as always, feel free to pass this story along.
