It has taken some time, but the Reedy Creek Improvement District is slowly being restructured under new leadership. Check out the new name and what this new brand will look like in promoting safety and well-being to Walt Disney World guests and Cast Members.
Dissolution of Reedy Creek
Since 2022, tensions continued to grow between the Walt Disney Company and the state of Florida. The tension between the company and the state continued to worsen as state Republicans repealed the Reedy Creek Improvement Act of 1967.
Essentially, the law states that Disney is its own governing body in the two cities and land within Orange and Osceola counties. This bill was passed in February 2023. Jeff Vahle, President of The Walt Disney World Resort, responded that they remain committed to providing the highest quality experience for guests.
New Name Change
As part of this new bill, the Reedy Creek Improvement Act of 1967 was changed to the Central Florida Tourism Oversight District. This government-run agency has now made changes to the Reedy Creek Fire Department (RCFD).
First established in 1968, the RCFD provided fire prevention along with fire protection to the Disney district. Later in 1971, they also provided ambulance services. For decades the RCFD provided fire, rescue, and emergency services throughout the Reedy Creek Improvement District operating out of 4 fire stations.
Today, the Reedy Creek Fire District reveals its new brand as the “District Fire Department.”

How will this affect guests?
For the time being, expect little to no changes. However, this does mean that over time, more interference from the state will affect Walt Disney World.
Thankfully emergency services are only receiving a name and brand change at this time.
