No one expects an emergency to arise during a vacation. Fortunately, there are safety plans in place should the unexpected happen on the high seas.

One such emergency happened aboard the Disney Fantasy, one of the ships in Disney Cruise Line’s fleet. The fantasy was in the Atlantic Ocean 180 miles northwest of Puerto Rico when a situation arose.

On Monday, a passenger aboard the Fantasy experienced a medical need for evacuation. According to United States Coast Guard News, Watchstanders in Sector San Juan received a message from the Disney Fantasy requesting medevac assistance.

Fortunately, the Coast Guard sprung into action, sending the Coast Guard Jayhawk aircrew to the scene. A rescue swimmer headed to the ship to ready a rescue basket to secure the passenger.

The passenger was airlifted and taken to the Fernando Luis Ribas Dominicci Airport in San Juan, Puerto Rico. They were ultimately transported to a local hospital.

The passenger’s name is not being released at this time to protect privacy. However, the U.S. Coast Guard reported the passenger to be a 35-year-old pregnant woman and a U.S. Citizen.

We do not know whether the patient has made a full recovery. However, Ensign Michael Riccio, Coast Guard Sector San Juan operations unit leader for the case reportedly stated, “The competency displayed by the Disney Fantasy crew and the Coast Guard personnel and units involved made all the difference.” We truly hope that the swift actions led to positive outcomes.
