Disney has worked with experts to help grow the population of endangered or threatened species.

Disney’s conservation efforts have brought numerous baby animals into the world from various endangered and threatened species. These births are part of an initiative called the Species Survival Plan.

A baby Addax was born at Disney World! Two-month-old Julien is the newest addition to the herd. There are less than 100 in the wild and around 180 in managed care (accredited by Associations of Zoos and Aquariums).

The Addax is part of the antelope family, and is very rare! Some places you can find them are in the Saharan desert or at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge.

Julien is the first male calf at the resort. His name is a blend of his mother’s, Juniper, and his father’s, Allen. This endangered species is known for its curly horns that they are born with.

His mother, Juniper, was also born at Walt Disney World. She was born two years ago. Unfortunately, her mother died from complications during childbirth.

It is very exciting that this announcement is right around Mother’s Day! Currently, they are living behind the scenes as Juniper navigates being a first-time mom while Julien adjusts to Addax life.

No date has officially been announced of when they will join the rest of the herd, but Disney stated they will be seen on the Sunset Savanna at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge soon!
