We have news for the lengthy refurbishment of Big Thunder Mountain Railroad. There is a shocking end date that has us shaking in our boots.
Big Thunder Refurbishment
Big Thunder Mountain was originally scheduled to undergo a major refurbishment in 2020, but due to COVID, it only received a minor refurbishment.
We all knew that a big refurbishment was needed for this thrilling attraction, but refurbishment plans were delayed due to the refurbishment of Splash Mountain into the newly reimagined Tiana’s Bayou Adventure.
According to the cast members, the refurbishment will involve moving the tower and replacing some or all of the tracks. The final scene may also be upgraded.
New Permit Filed
We heard word that Big Thunder Mountain Railroad may close later this year, and then another source shared that this would be in January or February 2025.
Disney just filed a permit for “General Construction” with the address of Big Thunder Mountain Railroad. Coastal Steel is listed as the contractor for this project.
Coastal Steel is also listed for the major refurbishment set for Test Track. Work is set to start for this refurbishment on June 17, 2024.
End Date
Disney has not made an official announcement for when Big Thunder Mountain Railroad will close. With a permit filed, we may hear an announcement soon.
The newly filed permit has an expiration date of August 8, 2025.
What is most surprising about this permit is the end date. Typically these expire one year after the filing date, but this expiration date is August 8, 2025. This is another indication that a lengthy refurbishment may affect Big Thunder Mountain Railroad.
