It is hurricane season, and a severe weather forecast has made Governor DeSantis declare a State of Emergency. Find out what this means for your Disney vacation.
Hurricane Season
Hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30. That’s half the year! Typically, most hurricanes hit during August, September, and October. September is considered peak hurricane season in Florida.
In the past, Disney World has only closed a handful of times due to hurricane activity in the area.
Closures for Hurricanes include:
- 1999: Hurricane Floyd
- 2004: Hurricane Charley
- 2004: Hurricane Frances
- 2004 Hurricane Jeanne
- 2016: Hurricane Matthew
- 2017: Hurricane Irma
- 2022: Hurricane Ian
State of Emergency
Due to a storm building that could affect almost all of Flordia, Governor DeSantis has issued a State of Emergency. The storm called Invest 97L has a 70 percent chance of becoming a tropical depression by this weekend or early next week. The storm will be named “Debby” if it becomes a named storm.
Invest 97L has a 70% chance of becoming a tropical depression as it travels through warm waters in the Gulf of Mexico.
Even though this storm may not become a major hurricane, Florida is expected to get heavy rain and potentially damaging floods. Those in Florida should monitor the weather closely and follow the guidance from the Division of Emergency Management and local officials.
