Extended Downtime Expected for the Disney World Railroad

Final Reopening

A noted train enthusiast, Walt Disney built his very first railroad in his backyard. This love of trains resulted in railroads existing at every Disney Park around the globe.

While the Walt Disney Railroad opened with the Park in 1971, it has seen significant downtime. Most recently, the Walt Disney World Railroad closed at the end of 2018 to prepare for TRON Lightcycle Power Run.

Due to this new attraction, a tunnel had to be constructed which resulted in a 4-year closure. The Walt Disney World Railroad finally reopened for guests in December 2022.

Disney guests were ecstatic with the announcement of 2 Cars-themed attractions coming to Magic Kingdom. That excitement was short-lived by some when news surfaced that this new land would permanently close the Rivers of America.

With this extensive expansion in Frontierland, it appears that the Walt Disney World Railroad may also be affected.

Both Tom Sawyer Island and Rivers of America are part of the current Walt Disney World Railroad Track. With permits filed, plans are in place to start work in 2025.

According to recent permits, it appears that the railroad will be in between the construction staging and the new construction. This does not look good for the Walt Disney World Railroad.

Similarly, a Villains Land is also promised for Magic Kingdom. While we still await news for when work may begin, we have a sneaky suspicion that due to it being “Beyond Big Thunder” construction work may also pause operations for the Walt Disney World Railroad.

If you have a trip to the Magic Kingdom in 2024, take a ride along the Walt Disney World Railroad because it may be a while before the opportunity to enjoy this classic attraction for a little while.
