Hurricane Milton is gaining speed and Walt Disney World and its surrounding cities brace for impact. Find out the latest updates for this storm and airport closings to be aware of.
Hurricane Milton Intensifies
This weekend, a tropical storm developed into Hurricane Milton and it is expected to hit the gulf coast of Florida by mid-week.
The most likely path suggests Milton could make landfall on Wednesday. It would start in the Tampa Bay Area and work its way across the state to the Atlantic coast.
Hurricane Milton has intensified into a category 5 hurricane. Now winds are expected to reach 160 mph. As a reference, this was a Category 4 storm just this morning.
Airport Closure
Tampa International Airport will close due to Hurricane Milton and will suspend flight operations at 9:00 am on Tuesday, October 8, 2024. The airport will only reopen when safe to do so.
Travelers are encouraged to check directly with their airlines for flight updates. The entire airport will be evacuated and this will not serve as a shelter for people or vehicles.
The Orlando International Airport just announced that they will cease commercial operations on Wednesday morning, October 9th. Commercial operations will return as soon as it is safe. The airport will not be closed to allow emergency aid and relief flights if needed. This will only affect “commercial passengers and private operations.”
Hurricane Watch Issued
As of 11:00 am on October 7, 2024, Orange County and Osceola County (including Walt Disney World) are now under a Hurricane Watch. This is a warning that hurricane conditions are possible and to make preparations.
A Hurricane Watch is now issued for Walt Disney World. This is typically issued 48 hours before the anticipated first occurrence of tropical-storm-force winds.
At this time Walt Disney World continues to monitor the conditions, and no closures have been made. You can see the current changes to Walt Disney World policies as they prepare for Hurricane Milton HERE.
We will continue to monitor the situation and share closures and changes to park hours in the coming days. Our thoughts and prayers are with the residents of Florida and those visiting this week.
