Local legend has it that strange things began to occur following the discovery of gold in the 1850s. Reportedly, trains would move and race through tunnels by themselves. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can explore an abandoned mine shaft and board a train at the Big Thunder Mountain Railroad Attraction.

It’s the wildest ride in the wilderness!

Be prepared to dodge exploding dynamite and falling boulders as the train speeds along the rickety tracks. This attraction is a favorite among visitors of Disney parks due to its high speeds and thrilling bumps and turns.

Back in May, we indicated that big plans were in the works for the attraction. It was originally supposed to close in 2020 for some serious work. However, it only received some small updates.

Our sources indicate this longer refurbishment will involve moving the tower and replacing some or all of the track. The final scene may also be upgraded.

Then, permits were filed back in June that showed just how long and extensive this refurbishment may be.

We now have official word that the ride will close on January 6, 2025 and reopen sometime in June 2026. That’s an entire year! The last day to ride will be January 5.

The ride is planned to reopen with new enhancements, but that’s the only detail provided thus far. With a year-long closure, we anticipate some pretty big updates and upgrades.
