Disney has announced that two lions from Disney’s Animal Kingdom have entered retirement. What does this mean for the Kilimanjaro Safaris?
African Lion as Inspiration
The African lions have been a big presence for the last ten years on the savanna at the Kilimanjaro Safaris. They have created many memories for guests along with inspiration for the big screen.
Dakari and Kamari, the two lions who have been a part of the savanna for the last decade, have served as inspiration for the live action “The Lion King.” Film makers visited the savanna to bring the most life-like retelling of one of our favorite stories.
Dakari and Kamari have also served as ambassadors for African lions. They have brought the opportunity for cast members to educate guests on ways to contribute to conservation and how to protect other animals.
Lions Enter Retirement
The African lions are one of the most iconic spots when enjoying Kilimanjaro Safaris. I (Heather) know it’s my favorite, and I always try and get a glimpse of a lion catching some rays.
Disney has recently shared that the two lions, Dakari and Kamari, have now entered retirement. The two lions will enjoy retirement at a conservation haven in Florida accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA).
What Happens Now?
The Disney animal team will miss these beautiful lions, but they made this decision with the lions’ wellbeing in mind. Once the lions are settled in their new home, Disney plans to welcome a new group of young lions.
The new lions will spend their first few weeks backstage getting used to the their new home and keepers.
The new lions will be welcomed by the animal care team that will work tirelessly to make these animals comfortable. In the initial weeks of their arrival, they will spend their time backstage. This will give them time to get used to their new home and keepers.
The keepers won’t have to worry about introductions between the lions as they are siblings!
