The Walt Disney Company has come under fire for being “too woke.” Disney just made a big shift in their newest film, stepping away from this “woke” agenda. What do you think about this change?
Walt Disney Company
Disney has come under fire recently from many fans for being “too woke.” The “woke culture” is defined as advocating for social justice and equality for people who are disadvantaged due to their race, gender, sexual orientation, or other factors.
Over the years, many have questioned the choices made by the Walt Disney Company. First in replacing Splash Mountain with Tiana’s Bayou Adventure
This also climaxed in 2022 when Bob Chapek, the Walt Disney Company CEO at the time, spoke out against the Parental Rights in Education Law. This led to the dissolution of the Reedy Creek Improvement District, and several lawsuits followed. Disney eventually dropped all remaining lawsuits.
Removal of Transgender Content
Many believe the company should stick to entertaining people instead of inserting itself into political matters or family education choices. Despite claims by Disney that they are not “woke”, Disney fans do not agree which is seen with the decline of the company’s popularity.
Disney Pixar announced a new series, “Win or Lose.” This original short follows a co-ed school softball team, the Pickels. Recently, a controversial scene was leaked online when news surfaced that it was cut from the animated series.
The scene introduced a transgender storyline as a character could not decide which labeled bathroom to enter. The character remains in the story, but this scene and content are completely removed.
Reason for Change
Disney shared with The Hollywood Reporter, “When it comes to animated content for a younger audience, we recognized that many parents would prefer to discuss certain subjects with their children on their own terms and timeline.”
Win or Lose will debut on Disney+ on February 19, 2025.
This is a shift from the previous news coming from the Walt Disney Company. Perhaps this change will continue to ripple throughout other Disney programming and decision-making.
