Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend is almost here. However, runDisney has advised athletes on how to best prepare for the upcoming weekend.
Cold Weather Ahead
Watch out for falling iguanas because a cold snap is about to hit Central Florida. Earlier this week, we shared that frigid weather is set to hit Central Florida this upcoming weekend. You can read more about that HERE.
Central Florida is expecting cold temperatures this weekend!
Unfortunately, this cold weather will fall during Marathon Weekend. Thousands of athletes will be out participating in the weekend’s events in the extremely cold temperatures.
Weather Tips From runDisney
Usually, runDisney is giving runners advice on how to best prepare for warm weather running. However, this race weekend, runDisney is giving cold weather tips.
Cool Weather Tips include:
- Bundle up before the race. Be sure you stay warm prior to the start. Any discarded layers (blankets/clothing) will be donated to local charities
- Stay hydrated. Continue to hydrate by alternating water and electrolyte-based hydration options, but keep your normal hydration routine on race day.
- Have layers that are made of synthetic material versus thicker material (cotton). Athletes should consider a hat and gloves. Be sure that your bib remains on the outer most layer.
- Ask for assistance if you show any signs of hypothermia. Hypothermia signs include abnormal heart rate, fatigue, shivering, cold pale skin, and loss of coordination.
- If you are using a heat shield (mylar blanket) to keep warm prior to the race, be sure to discard it prior to crossing the start line. Your timing chip on your bib will not read if you are wearing a mylar blanket .
It is important to take these weather tips seriously for the best and safest race experience.
What Does This Mean to You?
If you are participating this weekend, be sure to be prepared. We know the weather is going to be cold, and it will even feel cold for athletes that are coming from the northern states. Cold in Florida, is a different kind of cold.
It is important to be as prepared as possible. Take any signs of hypothermia seriously, and seek medical assistance as needed.
Now is the time to prepare and get the necessary items to keep yourself safe and to have an enjoyable race.
