If you are looking for bucket-list-worthy theme park food during your visit to Universal Orlando Resort, be sure to book Mythos. Here is our honest review.
Dining at Universal
Many people assume that when they visit a theme park like Universal Orlando Resort they will be living off of standard theme park foods such as chicken tenders, burgers, hot dogs, pizza, and fries (and of course, Butterbeer) for the entirety of the trip. While you can certainly find such things in Universal, there is also no shortage of unique and interesting dining options, too!
With over 100 dining locations among the theme parks, CityWalk, and the resort hotels, Universal has plenty of options. And, some of them are downright good!
For example, CityWalk has plenty of choices. You might consider Cowfish for a delightful sushi-burger fusion experience. If you want a classic Italian dinner, head to Vivo Italian Kitchen. But, if you find yourself interested in a delightful full-service dining experience inside one of the theme parks, consider booking Mythos.
Mythos
Mythos is located in the Universal Islands of Adventure. You will find it in The Lost Continent area, near the now permanently closed Poseidon’s Fury attraction.
This award-winning, full-service restaurant offers exceptional modern cuisine in a mythical setting that sparks the imagination. It features a mix of Mediterranean, Asian, and American fare, and the menu includes a number of creative and surprisingly good combinations. And, the price points provide a relatively decent value considering the overall quality of the menu items.
It is certainly theme park dining bucket-list-worthy. It was on my (Kate’s) personal dining wish list for several years, and it did not disappoint once I finally managed to work it into a visit.
Reservations
Mythos does accept reservations. You can read all about booking Universal dining experiences right HERE.
Advanced reservations are generally a good idea, especially during crowded times. However, you might be able to get a same-day reservation or even walk-up availability.
Such was the case when my travel party visited. We happened to be passing by Mythos and decided to try our luck for lunch. The Team Members there quoted our party of 9 a 20-minute wait, so we added our name to the list. We were called back within 5 minutes!
Even so, I’d still recommend a reservation if you suspect you want to dine here just to be on the safe side. Luck does favor the prepared after all.
Atmosphere
Mythos is a lovely restaurant. It looks as if it is carved directly into a rock formation among the waterfalls. It’s like a cave in a mythical grotto.
It is decorated with plenty of mystical theming including sculptural carvings, tile work, artwork, and unique architectural features. You can choose to dine inside of the cavernous restaurant. Or, if you prefer, there is also outdoor seating.
Our party had a table outside as the temperature that day was right for outdoor dining. Our table overlooked the Hulk Coaster, which was a nice touch, especially since one of the children in our party is a huge roller coaster fan and enjoyed watching it launch and barrel through the inversions over and over.
Starters
Our group started with a plate of Baked Lamb Meatballs. These are served with rosemary-infused polenta, Kalamata olives, and sweet chili marinara as well as mint chimichurri.
This dish came with 3 meatballs, but they were large enough to split so that everyone could try one if they wished. Everyone was pretty hungry from our adventures so far that day, so the meatballs probably wouldn’t have lasted long even if we hadn’t liked them.
But, like them, we did. They were tender and flavorful with a bit of a kick. The polenta was especially delicious.
Main Course
There were almost too many delicious-looking dishes to select from. I was torn between the Butternut Squash Mascarpone Ravioli and the Seared Sea Scallop Risotto. So, our server suggested I order the Raviloli and add the seared scallops.
This turned out to be a great suggestion. The dish was ultimately delicious. The ravioli had a delightful lemony sauce, and the scallops were seared nicely. I would have been happy with just the ravioli dish as it is, but the enchantment really was worth the small upcharge.
Another member of my travel party had the Catch of the Season, which that day was a delightful piece of blackened fish. This was served with roasted fingerling potatoes, black lentils, roasted radish, salsa verde, arugula tomato salad.
This was another solid dish. The person who ordered it is not a theme park regular and remarked that while it wasn’t the #1 fish dish he’d ever ordered, it was surprisingly great. He also noted that it was such a pleasant surprise to find anything like it in the middle of a theme park.
Another member of our party had the Fork, Knife and Spoon Grilled Cheese. This is a unique presentation of a classic 3 cheese sandwich set in a vine-ripe tomato soup with crispy pork belly. It is garnished with house-made chips.
This is a dish that has a cult-like following among Universal regulars. And, our verdict is that it is every bit as good as it sounds. Even better, since the day was cool, it was a perfect bit of comfort food.
We also had someone order the Pad Thai. This dish was composed of rice noodles, mixed vegetables, chicken, and shrimp tossed in a mild sweet and sour peanut sauce. He was quite satisfied with the dish.
Overall, the entrees were a win!
The last adult in our party went for the Traditional Bacon Cheeseburger. The menu describes it as a half pound of Creekstone farms Black Angus beef topped with cheddar cheese, bacon, lettuce, and tomato served with French fries. She had the bacon left off.
All in all, it was a good burger! Our favorite in Universal remains the Burger over at CowFish, but this one was pretty tasty, too!
Options for Kids
Some Universal restaurants do not offer kid’s menus. Mythos, thankfully, does. And, they provide coloring activities for the kids, too.
One of our younger travelers tried the Pizza. This was a relatively standard kid’s pizza, but it was well-received. We did not hear any complaints from the kids’ end of the table.
The next child ordered grilled cheese. This dish came with two sides, so the child ordered fries and fruit. The fruit that day turned out to be orange slices.
This also vanished in its entirety. Walking around Universal all day makes for hungry kids, after all.
Another child tried the Mythos Burger. It came with a choice of sides, so he asked for apple sauce and fries. This is the exact sort of thing you would expect in a theme park.
He liked it pretty well anyhow. The whole thing disappeared before long. He is a kid who sometimes orders items off the adult menu and he said he likes the Wimpy Burger and Cowfish burgers better, too.
Value
While table service restaurants are by no means inexpensive, I was surprised to find that entrees here are in the $25-$35 range in general. Kid’s meals were in the $10-$12 range, not much more than what you would pay at the Counter Service restaurants.
Since Mythos is the most elevated dining experience inside of the theme parks, I prepared myself for higher prices. The food was well worth it, and this is one place that I didn’t find to be overpriced. We were also able to apply UOAP discounts to make the price even nicer.
Final Thoughts
Overall, Mythos was a delight. It is a restaurant that I certainly want to revisit. It was worth the time it took out of our park day; in fact, it provided a welcomed break from all the walking and standing.
Moreover, it did not take nearly as long as some of the sit-down restaurant experience at Universal. In fact, I have been to Universal counter service restaurants that took longer to get the food to us.
I also appreciated that while there were adventurous options on the menu, there were also plenty of safe choices for picky eaters. This is a place that foodies can enjoy, but they can also bring along their non-foodie friends, and everyone ends up happy.
