Will Wicked Defy Gravity at the Oscars This Year

The nominations are in for the 97th Academy Awards! If you are curious how many nominations Wicked swept up, you are in the right place!

Wicked, the hit movie from Universal Pictures, has flown into theatres and captured hearts across the country. The movie, which was adapted from the hit Broadway musical, debuted at number 1 when it hit theatres in November.

The film has since maintained a top 3 spot each week. In fact, it has smashed records by becoming the highest-grossing Broadway musical adaptation of all time at the domestic box office.

Wicked has already won a number of awards. And, now it has racked up more than a few Oscar Nominations!

Wicked has been nominated for 10 Oscars. Here are the nominations:

  • Best Picture
  • Best Actress in a Leading Role (Cynthia Erivo)
  • Best Actress in a Supporting Role (Ariana Grande)
  • Best Visual Effects (Pablo Helman, Jonathan Fawkner, David Shirk and Paul Corbould)
  • Best Sound (Simon Hayes, Nancy Nugent Title, Jack Dolman, Andy Nelson and John Marquis)
  • Best Editing (Myron Kerstein)
  • Best Production Design (Nathan Crowley; Set Decoration: Lee Sandales)
  • Best Original Score (John Powell and Stephen Schwartz)
  • Best Makeup and Hairstyling (Frances Hannon, Laura Blount and Sarah Nuth)
  • Best Costume Design (Paul Tazewell)

Ten nominations is HUGE, especially with Best Picture, Best Actress, and Best Supporting Actress in the mix. Even so, many fans cannot help but wonder why Wicked director Jon M. Chu did not receive a nomination. Is it a snub?

If you want to cheer on Wicked, be sure to tune in. You can watch the Oscars on March 2, 2025 at 7 PM EST. Of course, you can also turn into the Red Carpet coverage beforehand if you want to see the stars come out!

Wicked isn’t the only nominee from Universal Pictures. The Wild Robot will be up against Inside Out 2 for Best Animated Feature.
