Some of you may remember the era when theme parks were busily trying to outdo each other by creating the biggest and fastest coasters! It was a fun time to be a theme park fan.

And in the end, one coaster stood above them all: Kingda Ka. Kingda Ka in Six Flags Great Adventure in New Jersey was one of the world’s tallest and fastest roller coasters.  It launched riders to speeds of up to 128 miles per hour and climbed to a peak height of 456 feet.

In its time, it thrilled over 12 million visitors. But recently, much to the dismay of its fans, we learned that Kingda Ka would close after just 19 years of operation.

In November 2024, Six Flags confirmed that Kingda Ka would close forever. This also spelled the end for Zumanjaro: Drop of Doom, the drop tower attached to the coaster. Rumors had already been swirling that the coaster would shut down, and a number of its fans flocked to the park to enjoy it one last time in response to the rumors.

As of February 28, 2025, Kingda Ka is no longer the tallest coaster in the world. It was demolished. You can see the implosion right here. It is both fascinating and sad.

Six Flags is replacing Kingda Ka and several other attractions including The Twister, Parachutes, and The Sky Way are all being removed as well. The Green Lantern roller coaster is also closing.

Six Flags Great Adventure has promised to unveil a record-breaking launch coaster. Park President calls what’s coming “a must-ride attraction sure to capture fans’ imaginations.”
