Recently, Disney Parks announced a new Cars area for Walt Disney World. However, this will not be an expansion. It will be a replacement for attractions that add a lot of charm to the Magic Kingdom.

Walt Disney World will be draining Rivers of America and demolishing Tom Sawyer’s Island to transform the face of Frontierland. All new Cars attractions will take the place of these opening day originals.

While some people care nothing about Rivers of America and Tom Sawyer’s Island, others love the ease and simplicity of the attractions. They are elements of the park Guests can enjoy with little waiting, and they provide carefree experiences for relaxation and exploration. For those who love them, the thinking is generally that if Disney is going to destroy them, the replacements had better be both beautiful additions to the landscape and spectacularly fun additions to the attractions lineup.

The more we find out about the new Cars attractions, the more hope it brings that they might be worthy replacements. Today at The Future of World-Building at Disney panel at SXSW, Pixar Chief Creative Officer Pete Docter, and Imagineer Michael Hundgen gave us a little glimpse into what is coming!

Many people suspected that one of the new Cars attractions might be a clone of Disneyland’s Radiator Springs Racers. However, today’s announcement confirms that this will be an entirely NEW experience.

For the Walt Disney World Attraction, the Cars characters are leaving Radiator Springs behind to explore some new frontier! They will be taking the adventure off-road.

NEW Ride Vehicles

In fact, this attraction calls for the development and creation of all-new ride vehicles for a first-of-its-kind experience. The team has been to Arizona for research and has even worked with motocross to develop a dirt track for testing. “We’re using a customized production vehicle,” Hundgen said, “It has sensors all over it, and we’re taking it for test drives on our dirt track to gather data on how the vehicle responds to different terrain. This is where we turn that feeling we want into real-world engineering.”

The vehicles will certainly be durable. After all, ride vehicles such as these may travel as much as 65,000 miles per year as they carry guests around their respective attractions. Below we see a video of a 3D printed toy rolling along a track with bumps.

A while back, Disney showed this initial testing of an ATV riding around dirt hills.

They even shared sketches of what the finished product will look like. They are creating “new race car personalities for this attraction. Each vehicle in the ride will have its own name and number, just like a real race.”
